about

This song flew out of me like a bird after the shooting of Jacob Blake, after a summer of our country reckoning with its broken justice system and its racist history of criminalizing and victimizing black people. I am mourning and suffering the scars and traumas of this country build on a foundation of racism and inequities. Its hopeful ideals we can only hope will one day truly be meant for all men, women and children regardless of the color of their skin. I want so much to help. I am listening and learning. I am practicing empathy and compassion. Songs are sometimes the only way I know how. Let's keep love and hope alive. Let's not forget our past but learn from it and do better. Make sure you're registered to vote and make sure your vote is counted on November 3rd.

All proceeds from this recording will go to the Black Voters Matter Fund (blackvotersmatterfund.org) whose goal is to increase power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities. Effective voting allows a community to determine its own destiny. "We agree with the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he said, “Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”

Love to you all wherever this finds you,
Lauren

lyrics

Say their names
One and all
So we remember
Say their names
One and all
So we don’t forget
The pain and hurt they endured
How they suffered
Say their names
Over and over
So we remember

With a love in your heart
Fight for justice
With their name in your mind
Try to walk in their shoes
Feel what it’s like
To live behind a wall
You can’t break down alone

With your voice ringing loud
Join the choir
With your body and soul
Try to learn compassion
And feel what it’s like
To live behind a wall
You can’t break down alone

Pledge allegiance
To the movement, to the rhythm
Of freedom, Of glory
To writing ourselves a new story
